This may be unknown to many of you, though the story itself is old enough – the Japanese invented a real philosopher’s stone that turns mercury into gold. It was discovered in 1924 during the nuclear experiment. They put one mercury isotope under the layer of paraffin oil and and pointed 150 000 volts of electricity at it, in order to create a new element. And they succeeded, they made gold out of mercury. All that thanks to professor Hantaro Nagaoka. So, he reopened and closed the theory of the philosopher’s stone, that said that a specific rock can turn other metals into gold. Luckily, in our time alchemy is not punishable by death, so hypothetically we could discover more interesting things in our future.
