The mucus helps in moving or sending chemical messages to almost all snails. Marine snails of the family Janthinidae, whose size does not exceed two and a half centimeters, have an excellent strategy in using the mucus – it is used to make a boat built of bubbles on which they float on the ocean’s surface. Basically this method is a skill: a snail bends its body that captures air and makes a bubble, the new bubble is added to the others and thus the snail expands its vessel. Snails that produce the most mucus can produce one bubble for one minute. Janthinidae are sequential hermaphrodites (they become females in maturity period) but the rules of life before the ‘sailing’ may vary. Young male of the rare specie Recluzia lives comfortably attached to the female that floats. The male has a place where he can stay, and both are given the chance to reproduce. When they hatch, the Janthinidae larvae fall into the ocean and swing there until they become able to float by themselves.
